ABOUT THE DESIGN

Sabrina Bedford is an artist and author based in California. Sabrina was born in Brazil and grew up in Fort Worth, Texas before going to Stanford for her BA in Art Practice and English (Creative Writing). While attending school, she met her now fiancé, Andrew. Upon graduation she worked at the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy for seven years, coordinating and managing a public arts program in San Francisco on locations such as Alcatraz, the Presidio of San Francisco, and Lands End, and many others. In 2020, she began a masters program at Academy of Art University to pursue a career in illustration for entertainment media. Throughout those years at the park and her time in grad school, she has designed and illustrated over a dozen books for several authors, and published one of her own. 
 

The fish mosaic was created in the summer of 2011, after my sophomore year of college at Stanford. I was fortunate to spend those summer months learning from Dan Phillips and other Houston artists, very early in the development of the mosaic murals. I was deeply inspired by the environmental movement, climate conscious creativity, and natural resources of Houston. I was also disappointed by the build up of garbage and debris at the bayou and other natural places. While exploring the materials in the warehouse, I found a lamp shade that to me perfectly resembled a fish’s fin. The fish and other water related elements connected the bayou near the park and that connection with Texas’ natural resources with my new coastal home in California. I hoped that the fish would turn the viewer’s attention to their local water resources, and consider how precious that is. I wanted him to be warm and inviting, using yellows and oranges to contrast the blue waters. He is rather joyful and musical, the musical elements (like the ‘banjo”) a nod to my family’s musical creativity.
