THE SMITHER PARK MEMORY WALL - SECTION 3

"Phoenix Rising"

c. 2012

Designed & Constructed by: Carroll Ison, with assistance from Melissa Ison

ABOUT THE DESIGN

My mother and I connected with the idea of creating a Phoenix because of its symbolism of growth, abundance and strength. I was about to enter into my freshman year of college, a transition of time when there is so much unknown and excitement. I would be leaving home soon to make new friends and memories, and discover more about my passion for art and the path it would lead me.

My mom and I decided to create the Phoenix to represent my departure from home with the strength and independence of this magical bird. This was such a special project for both of us. We spent every day of the summer together at Smither Park, working until sunset alongside Mrs. Smither, Dan Phillips and our incredible community of enthusiastic artists. The Phoenix is made of found materials, including plates, glass bottles, cans, silverware, coins, wires, antlers, shells, and tiles.
